Suffragists rally in Russell Park ahead of a statewide referendum in 1916 on giving women the right to vote. Greene County men approved the measure — 1,692 to 1,018 — but the issue failed statewide by 10,000 votes. The question of women voting wouldn’t be settled until Aug. 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment was adopted as part of the U.S. Constitution.
