Bernice Bass

Bernice Irene Bass was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Carroll, to Keith and Odessa (Hoyt) Brown. She passed away on Feb. 25, in Creston, at the age of 85.

Services were held March 2, 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Fontanelle. Officiating Pastor Cathy Butting. Pallbearers: Kevin Rice, Craig Maston, Chris Wood, Michael Ehler, Matt House, and Chris Farrand. Honorary Pallbearers: Angie Rice, Karla Maston, Candy Wood, Michele Ehler, Amanda House, and Heather Farrand. Internment was the Scranton Cemetery, Scranton.

Bernice grew up in the Scranton, area and went to school at Scranton then graduated from Bayard High School in 1948. She was united in marriage to John (Jack) Bass Nov. 6, 1948, at the Scranton United Methodist Church. To this union three children were born: Diane Carol, Charlene Kathryn and Jim Marion.

Bernice was a homemaker and a helping hand in their farming operation. They farmed near Scranton and Jefferson until they purchased their farm north of Fontanelle in 1968. Upon retirement they moved to their home in Fontanelle.  
Bernice was a member of the Methodist Church and served as an organist and pianist for many years. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, crocheting and especially her grandchildren. She also looked forward to winters in Arizona for many years.

She is survived by her husband, John (Jack) Bass of Fontanelle; children, Diane Rice (Darwin) of Jefferson, Charlene Wood (Dean) of Coralville and Jim Bass (Kathy) of Fontanelle; six grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; brother, Wayne Brown (Phyllis) of Bayard; two sisters, Elaine Seaman (Robert) of Carroll and Lois Taylor (Merlin) of Cedar Falls; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter and two great grandchildren.

The Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle was in charge of the professional arrangements.
