Eugene Monahan

Eugene J. Monahan, the son of Fred and Agnes (Grace) Monahan, was born Sept. 15, 1922 in Cedar Township on his parent’s farm near Adaza and departed this life surrounded by his family on Jan. 25 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. He lived his life to the age of 92 years.  
Eugene attended country school for eight years and graduated from the Churdan High School in 1940. Eugene farmed with his father and later his brother, Raymond.

On November 25, 1947, Eugene Monahan was united in marriage to Marie Burke at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lohrville. Eight children were born to this union. After their marriage, Eugene and Marie lived their entire 67 years of married life together on their present farm home. Eugene farmed and raised livestock and retired in 1987. Eugene and Marie enjoyed farm life, attending their children and grandchildren’s activities, playing cards and being with friends and family. Marie passed away on March 11, 2014 and Eugene continued to make his home on the family farm.

Eugene was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church at Cedar and St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan. His Catholic Faith was a very important part of his life which he passed on to his entire family.

Eugene is survived by his seven children: Delores (Ivan) Kenney of Bagley, Diane (Jerry) Carlson of Clive, Teresa (Ron) Dickson of Alpharetta, G.a., Kevin (Joy) of Rockwell City, Jerome (Dorene) of Churdan, Phillip (Pam) of Wayne, Neb. and Richard (Missy) of Lohrville, 20 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and a sister, Rosemary (Bud) Minnehan, and sister-in-law’s, Julie Monahan and a lifelong friend, Pat Casserly. Those who preceded him in death were his parents, wife, Marie, a son, Patrick in 1968, two brothers, Raymond and Michael and four sisters, Grace Beschorner, Dorothy Higgins, Genevieve Ganley and Marcella Monahan.

Mass of the Christian burial was held Jan. 29, at 10:30 a.m. from St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan with Father Jeff Schleisman, Father Lynn Bruch and Father Phillip Schmitt officiating. Burial was made in the St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery west of Churdan. Music at the service was played by organist, Lois Last.

Serving as casket bearers were his grandsons: Matthew Kenney, Patrick Kenney, Brian Carlson, Eric Monahan, Chad Monahan, Shawn Monahan, Mick Monahan, Craig Monahan, Nick Monahan and Brett Monahan. Honorary bearers were his granddaughters; Jennifer Brunk, Katie Carlson, Jamie Monahan, Jessica Young, Sarah Monahan, Megan Carman, Mikayla Monahan, Mackenzie Monahan, Madison Monahan and Mollie Monahan.

Holy Rosary was prayed at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Vigil service at the church on Jan. 28 evening.

The Brown Funeral Home of Churdan was assisting the family.
