Jean Hedges
Jean E. Hedges, age 97, of rural Scranton passed away on Feb. 10, at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson.
Born on Oct. 8, 1917 on her family’s farm near Bayard, she was the daughter of William and Nell (Pangborn) Capel. She grew up in Greene County and graduated from Bayard High School in 1935. Jean was married to Wayne Hedges on March 20, 1937 at the home of her parents near Bayard. To this union were born two children Kent and Jan. Jean and Wayne farmed south west of Scranton their entire married life. She worked for several years at the Greene County Courthouse in the Assessor’s office. Wayne passed away on July 26, 2003 and Jean had a strong will and determination to stay on her farm. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Scranton. She was also a member of Eastern Star and the U Go I Go Club. Jean enjoyed gardening, playing cards, collecting antiques, and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was an avid sports fan and loved to watch football and baseball especially the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jean is survived by a daughter Jan Reever and her husband Rich of Fairfield; four grandchildren: Julie Hedges Letze and her husband Larry of Runnells; Kent W. Hedges II and his wife Patricia of Cambridge, Md., Jason Reever and his wife Roni of Clearwater, Minn., and Renee Reever Olson and her husband Mark of Boulder City, NV; seven great grandchildren: Stacey, Stephanie, and Ashley Letze, Kaila, Justian, and Kuria Reever, and Lauren Olsen; two step great grandchildren: Corey and Danielle Love; four great great grandchildren, and one nephew Tom Capel of Wilton, Calif..
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wayne, a brother John Capel, a sister Kathleen Aalfs, a son Kent Hedges and his wife Becky, and a granddaughter Tracey Lynn Hedges Burrows.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Scranton with Pastor Joyce Webb officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 21 where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes. Casket bearers will be Richard Hunter, Scott Hunter, Randy Hedges, David Borkowski, Dale Hoyt, and Paul Bartley. Honorary casket bearers will be Horace Hedges, Jack Bass, Bob Seaman, Bub Gleason, Jim Curl, Jean’s card club friends: Lou Wiederin. Louise Hupp, Jean Naylor, Linda Hedges, and Jean’s caregivers and staff of Stay Home Care. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery.
