Joseph G. Burchfield was born September 13, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa.  His parents were Charles S. and Viola M. (Pettit) Burchfield.  Joe went to St. Mary’s Academy in Grand Junction until the eighth grade, then attended Grand Junction Community School and eventually graduated from Des Moines Tech High School. Joe married Mary Jo Kiefer on April 8, 1967.  They made their home west of Dana where Joe farmed.  Joe will be remembered for his love of skating in his younger years at Spring Lake, for being a Ford man, and for collecting toy tractors.  He loved tractor pulls and NASCAR.  Joe had a fun sense of humor but was also not afraid of telling you exactly what he thought.

Joe donated his body for science at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.  He was preceded in death by his parents and Mary Jo’s parents, Virgil and Mary Leone Kiefer; two brothers-in-law, Richard and Norman Kiefer; and a niece, Kristie Kiefer.

He is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Mary Jo; his daughter, Jennifer Jo (Mark) Miller of Scranton; his son, Joseph “Lil’ Joe” of Jefferson; and three grandchildren: Kasey, Tyler and Jesse, all of Scranton.  Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Debbie Kiefer of Colorado and Kathy (Dean) Jennings of Council Bluffs; a cousin, Jeri (Tom) Tinsley of Omaha; nieces; nephews; and friends.
