Joe Franey

Thomas Joseph “Joe” Franey was born on June 19, 1940 in Lanesboro to Charles and Agnes (Monahan) Franey. Joe passed away on July 11 in Jefferson, at the age of 74.

A lifelong Iowa resident, Joe called Greene County home the majority of his life and was a member of one of the final classes to attend Cooper High School in Franklin Township. He devoted many fulfilling hours to umpiring and refereeing local games. Franey Painting was his life’s work, which he owned and operated for three decades.

Joe is survived by his three children: Tom Franey (Micheale) of Payson, AZ, David Franey (Hilary) of San Jose, CA and Lisa Dostal (Dan) of Grover Beach, CA; five grandchildren: Jason Dostal, Elisabeth Dostal, Shellie Landers, Lynn Kelley and Stevie Franey; four brothers, Jerry (Carolyn) of Houston, Texas, Jim of Lanark, Illinois, Don (Jill) of Jefferson and Dennis (Carole) of Waukee, sister-in-law, Shirley Franey of Jefferson and many beloved nephews, nieces and other family members. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers: Bill, Richard and John, his sister Mary and sister-in-law Pat Franey.

A time of gathering for Joe’s family and friends was held on July 19, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home in Jefferson. A private burial with his family present was held Sunday afternoon at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery west of Churdan with MSGR Kevin McCoy officiating.
