Louis “Jerry” Jerome Carey, 75, died Nov. 1, 2015 at the Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City, Iowa.
Mass of the Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan with Father Jeff Schleisman officiating with burial in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery west of Churdan. Serving as casket bearers are John Sabus, Mark Miller, Matt Sabus, Dean Wallace, Rod St. Clair, Shawn Carey, Mark Millard and Mike Richards. Honorary bearers are John Hunt, Johnnie Shoemaker, Dennis Lamournux, Dean Sabus, LeRoy Miller, David Wallace, John Hardy Jr., Lloyd Richards, Joe Dewey, Ken Quinlan, Joe Millard and John Franey.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church with a Vigil for the Deceased at 7 p.m. Jerry Carey, a son of Louis and Agnes (Gingery) Carey, was born August 6, 1940 in Churdan. Jerry was raised west of Churdan and graduated from the Churdan Public School in 1958. He attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines where he met Sharon Quinlan. They were united in marriage on November 26, 1966 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan where they remained parishioners their entire marriage. Two children were born to this union, Michael and Mary Jo. Jerry was a member of St. Columbkille Knights of Columbus for many years and also served as treasurer on the Highland Corporation Board and for the Churdan Lion’s Club. Jerry began his working career as an auditor at the Burke Hotel in Carroll and later went to work at the Churdan Elevator. Jerry accepted a position at the First State Bank in 1966 where he worked until 1998 as a loan officer and later as bank president. He also served as Greene County Auditor and upon his retirement, he sold insurance in Churdan. Jerry enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, six grandchildren and a great-grand-child.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Sharon, son Michael (Dawn) Carey of Panora, daughter Mary Jo Carey of Churdan, grandchildren, Tate, Tiffanie and Trevor Carey and Kirsten, Releigh and Maggie St. Clair, a great-grandchild, Hailee Marie Binkley, two sisters, Dorothy Gaffney of Fulton, N.Y. and Fran (Joe) Millard of Waukee, a brother, Larry (Jackie) Carey of Sigourney and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Donna Hunt, Sister Carita Carey, Margaret Jeffers, Kathryn Fairfield and Delores Kaiser and nephews, Patrick Carey and Jay Kaiser.
Brown Funeral Home of Churdan is assisting the family with arrangements.
