Maxine Hanneman

Born on April 15th, 1925 in Jefferson she was the daughter of Thomas and Dora (Harrison) Millett. Maxine grew up in Jefferson, and graduated from Jefferson High School.  Following high school, Maxine worked at various jobs until she was married to Earl “Eddie” Hanneman on April 20th, 1944.  The ceremony took place in San Francisco, while he was on furlough with the Navy before being shipped out to serve in combat overseas during World War II.  After the War, the couple reunited, and moved to Carroll in 1945, where Maxine would spend her initial years here as a devoted wife, homemaker, and the raising of their 3 children.  Eddie passed away over Labor Day weekend in 1964.  Following his death, Maxine went to work for the Carroll County Assessor’s office, and then for the Carroll County Extension Service and 4-H, until her retirement in 1990.

Maxine has touched the life of many people.  Her commitment to serving our community, the First United Methodist Church, and those in need is second to none.  She will be fondly remembered as a devout member of the UMW, the children’s ministry, and teaching Sunday School.  Others will know her from being the secretary for the Carroll Swim Team during its early days, or her active roles in many of the Carroll Community Theater plays like Dutch Treat, Fishing Hat, Meet me in St. Louis.

Maxine belonged to the Signet Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and served Meals on Wheels for many years.  Maxine enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting, and crossword puzzles.  Maxine knitted over 40 afghans for family and friends as gifts.  She also frequently quilted with her sisters of the Eastern Star, and shared in fellowship weekly through several coffee clubs.  Along with her own children’s children, there are many youngsters that enjoyed sharing in Maxine’s life who lovingly know and refer to her as “Grandma Max”.
