Patrick McGivney

Patrick Eugene McGivney passed away peacefully around March 1 in West Des Moines. 

Patrick was born in Jefferson on March 17, 1940, to Mary Alice McGivney and Edward Delos McGivney. He attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Perry, where he graduated in 1958.

Patrick joined the Army in 1958. After basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, he was released to the National Guard in 1959, where he served until he was honorably discharged in 1963. Patrick attended St. Ambrose College, studying agriculture.

On Aug. 22, 1964, Patrick was united in marriage to Rosemary Rita Clayton McGivney. To this union, Patrick and Rosemary had three children: Jeffrey Thomas McGivney, Erin Maureen Thornburgh and Lori Ann Dale. 

Patrick most enjoyed spending his days on the family farm in Greenbrier Twp., where he raised pigs and cows along with row crops. Farming was truly his lifetime passion.

In later years, Patrick worked several years at Walmart in sporting goods and enjoyed fishing.

Those preceding Patrick in death were his wife, Rosemary Rita McGivney; parents Mary Alice McGivney and Edward Delos McGivney; and brother William D McGivney. 

Patrick is survived by his children: Jeff (Doni) McGivney, of Des Moines; Erin (Pat) Thornburgh, of New Virginia; Lori (Kenny) Dale, of West Des Moines; five grandsons:  Gavin (Xenia) McGivney, of Iowa City; Travis (Sydney) Thornburgh, of Des Moines; Kaleb Dale, of West Des Moines; Trevor Thornburgh, of New Virginia; and Liam Dale, of West Des Moines.  

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. May 15 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson. Family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson. Social distancing as well as masks or face coverings are required.
