Peggy Murrane

Peggy Ann Murrane, age 83, of Jefferson and formerly of Scranton passed away on Dec. 11, at The Gardens in Jefferson.

Peggy lived most of her life on a farm in rural Scranton with her husband Paul, whom she met at Carroll’s big-band dance hall, The Starline Ballroom, in the early 1950’s.  She was born in Carroll in 1931 to parents Earl and Agnes (Loneman) Hagerty.

After graduating Carroll High School, class of 1949, Peggy worked as a bookkeeper at a local creamery before she married Paul Murrane on Feb. 12, 1955.  Paul and Peggy had four children over a span of twenty years. Not surprisingly, Peggy was active with Scranton Consolidated School (and later Jefferson-Scranton School) as she had at least one child in that school system continuously for forty years.  In addition, she was involved with, and a long-time member of, St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton.

Peggy also loved her regular bridge club gatherings. The still-active club was started more than fifty years ago, and in addition to the ladies-only card games, featured many lively parties including an annual Fourth of July picnic.

Peggy was an avid reader and sports fan, and stayed current on everything from the latest novels, politics, and current events, to football and college basketball. She followed numerous sports teams, but had a particular fondness for the Iowa State Cyclones, her husband’s alma mater.

Peggy is survived by her children Cathleen (Murrane) Tapia of McCook, Neb., Patrick Murrane of Scranton, Mary Murrane (with Mark Chamberlin) of Boston, Mass., and Colleen (Murrane) Liesmann (with Brian Liesmann) of Leawood, Kan..  She is also survived by four grandchildren, J.P. and Felicia Tapia, and Jacob and Ethan Liesmann.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 17 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jefferson. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton after 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 16 where there will be a Christian Wake service held at 7:00 p.m. by St. Joseph’s Parish.
