Richard Brus

Richard Alan Brus, 68, of Scranton died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015 at his home in Scranton.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015 at the Scranton United Methodist Church with Pastor Joyce Webb officiating.   Organist for the service was be Lula Garnes and soloist was Chad Stevens.  Casket bearers were Doug Duff, Jerry Byerly, Randy Winkelman, Alan Johnston, Ruben Edmonds, and Dave Langel.  Burial was in Dillavou Cemetery near Scranton.  Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com  

Born on May 15, 1947 in Denison, he was a son of Elmer and Alta (Stuhr) Brus.  He grew up on his family’s farm near Scranton and graduated from Glidden High School 1965. 

Dick enlisted in the United States Navy in 1967 and served until 1972.  He was married to Ruth Robbins on June 30, 1973 at the Church of Christ parsonage in Scranton.  The couple later divorced.  He also served in the Army National Guard from 1980 – 1986 and in the Navy Reserves 1986 – 1997, when he retired from the military.  Dick was employed by the city of Scranton from 1979-1990 as a city worker, and from 1990 – 2005 he worked for the Greene County Secondary Road Department, retiring in 2005.  He then worked as an independent electrical and plumbing contractor. Over the years Dick was a member of the Scranton Volunteer Fire Department of which he served as chief, he was a Scranton First Responder, he worked as a reserve deputy for the Greene County Sherriff’s Department, he was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Elks Lodge, the JC’s, the Community Club, and he served on the Scranton City Council.  He was a member of the Scranton United Methodist Church.  Dick was an avid deer hunter.  He hunted bow and arrow, shot gun, and muzzle loader.  He also enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards, going to coffee with his friends, and most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Dick is survived by a son Robert Brus and his wife Tandra of Corpus Christie, Texas; two daughters: Becky Dreessen of Carroll and Robin Brus (Jerry Bornsen) of Omaha; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a brother Larry Brus and his wife Shelly of Churdan; two sisters: Karen Edmonds and her husband Ruben of Lawrence, Kansas, and Laurie Langel and her husband Dave of Milford; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Duane, and a sister Diane Johnston.
