Robert (Bob) Earl Day

Bob Day, 93, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023, at Canon City, Colorado. Bob was born to Earl and Anabel (Cuddy) Day near Jamaica, Iowa on May 31, 1929. During his childhood, the family moved from Copper to Jefferson where Bob grew up. Bob went to school in Jefferson and was quick on the football field. He tried playing after high school but when the tackles could catch him, they landed on him with vengeance. His leg was broken in one of the early games and that ended that career.

From high school on, both Bob and his brother, Jerry, worked on external electricity. The Jefferson Rural Electric Association (REA) hired the boys and provided them with a field of employment for their lifetime. Bob completed his work in Jefferson’s REA in 1965 and went on to Nebraska, South Dakota, the southwest, and various locations, until moving to Colorado Springs in 1978. For a brief time, he and Ardis Frette ran the “Louie’s Ice Cream Parlor” in Jefferson, but external electricity was Bob’s preferred choice.

His marriage to Lois Murphy was blessed by three children, Linda, Michael, and Mark.  In a later marriage to Kathryn Burns, Kitten Burns Day was adopted into the family and Britton Earl was born in 1970.

Bob was known for his warm smile and ability to converse and companion many, many friends throughout his life. He and his brother, Jerry, were very good at golf and competed whenever their lives and locations coincided. Bob’s companion in his later years was Carol Marple and her family in Canon City, Colorado. She, her daughter and husband, Gayle and Ed Hirt, provided loving support and care in his final years.

Bob is survived by his sons, Mark Day of Rippey, Iowa, Britt Day of Winona Lake, Indiana, and his sister, Sister Celesta (Rita Ann) Day of La Crosse, Wisconsin, plus numerous grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Ann Day, his daughter Linda, his son, Michael, and his brother, Jerry Day of Emmetsburg / Sioux City.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held in the spring in Jefferson where Bob requested that he be buried near his parent’s graves.
