Russell Niles

Russell L. Niles, 81, died Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at Regency Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Jefferson.

Visitation with the family was held Friday, Nov. 13, 2015 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson. Minister Bruce Webster led the Prayer Service. Recorded music “The Old Rugged Cross” by Alan Jackson was played. Honorary casket bearers were grandchildren Nick Niles, Dale Niles, Lisa Wolterman, Kimberly Niles, Sheila Grisham, Reilly Niles, Jon Niles, Ethan Niles, Ben Niles, Aaron Niles and Lori Finley.  Private burial will take place at a later date in Junction Township Cemetery in Grand Junction, Iowa. The Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard will perform graveside military Rites.

Russell Leroy Niles was born May 8, 1934 in Sac City, Iowa.  He was the son of Henry and Edna Pellersels Niles.  Russell joined the United States Army on November 17, 1953.  He was stationed at White Sands Missile Base in southern New Mexico.  He earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.  He was honorably discharged from active service on November 16, 1955.  Russell was united in marriage to Sandra Millard on June 11, 1956.  They became parents of three children.  Russell worked for Lubeck Brothers Oil Company in Sac City as a tank wagon driver.  In 1977, Russell and Sandra moved to Jefferson, Iowa.  Russell was employed as a truck driver and mechanic with the Iowa Department of Transportation for 20 years.  After retirement, Russell and Sandy enjoyed wintering in Texas for 10 years.  They also enjoyed camping in many locations all over the Midwest.  The grandchildren were a special part of Russell’s life.  Russell enjoyed having morning coffee with his local friends and neighbors.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Niles of Jefferson, IA; three sons: Douglas (Kathleen)) Niles of Manning, IA; Jeffery (Melissa) Niles of Jefferson, IA; and Donald (Kyle) Niles of Paton, IA;  ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; four step-great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Peggy) Niles of Sac City, IA; and other relatives and friends.
