Vernon Marine

Vernon Marine, 96, of Algona, formerly of Pocahontas and Rolfe, died Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at the Algona Good Samaritan Society.  

Vernon DeLoy Marine, the son of George and Gletha (Myers) Marine, was born on April 11, 1919 in Paton, Iowa. He graduated from Des Moines Township High School in 1936. Vernon served in World War II in the United States Army as a Tank Commander. On July 28, 1951, Vernon was united in marriage to Virginia Snook in Jackson, Minnesota. He farmed in the Paton and Graettinger areas, owned a full-service gas station in Rolfe, served as the Rolfe Chief of Police and for the city of Rolfe and later as a police officer for Pocahontas and was a heavy equipment operator for Pocahontas County. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pocahontas,  a pistol club the State Police Officers Association and the VFW. He loved to play golf, bowl and create woodworking projects. Vernon was a jack-of-all-trades and was known for his quick wit. He was very self-sufficient and loved to help his neighbors with their projects.

Left to cherish Vernon’s memory are his children: son, Donald L. (Becky) Marine of Algona, daughter, Susan D (Loren) Grashorn of Council Bluffs, daughter, Joan M. Olson and friend Mike of Des Moines, son, James L. (Shelly) Marine of Havelock and daughter, Ann M. (Bob) Harrison of Pocahontas; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Betty Marine of West Bend, Ethel Costa (Bob) of Fairhaven, MA, Lawna Snook of Vidor, TX and Betty Snook of Smithsburg, MD; brothers-in-law, Don Snook of Decatur, AL, Delmer Snook of Lucedale, MI, Paul Snook (Joyce) of Vidor, TX; a cousin, Elsie Fern Thielman of Palmer; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia on December 1, 1978; two sons, Richard P. Marine and Thomas W. Marine; brothers, Verl Myers, George Marine, Kenneth Marine and Edsel Marine and sisters, Alice Spencer and Mary Lou Gill.
