A disappointing season that saw the Greene County baseball team finish six games under .500 comes with a silver lining as two Rams players earned first team All-Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference honors this past week.
Senior shortstop Reid Lamoureux and sophomore catcher Tom Gannon represented the Jefferson based Greene County squad on the first team.
Lamoureux finished third in the conference in batting with a .462 average and his staggering .571 on-base percentage was second in the HOIAC, just behind Saydel’s Devin Porter, who boasted a .592 OBP. Lamoureux’s 36 hits put him eighth overall while his 28 runs scored placed him in the top-15. He also added 13 steals in 14 attempts, which was 10th best in the conference and struck out just seven times. On the defensive side, Lamoureux assisted on 45 put outs - eighth overall.
Gannon was a force behind the plate in 2016, throwing out 13 runners, which was second in the conference just behind PCM’s Ryan Hill, who had 14. The catcher also batted .351, placing in the top-20 in the HOIAC and knocked in 14 runs.
Senior third baseman Tyler Beger and freshman pitcher Austin Delp each earned honorable mention distinction as well.
Beger knocked in 16 RBI to go with 10 stolen bases. He posted a an .853 fielding percentage and assisted on 34 putouts. As a pitcher, Beger made nine starts and struck out 31.
Delp blossomed into Greene County’s best pitching threat in the later weeks of the season. The freshman finished the year with a 3-2 record in 36 innings and a 2.92 ERA. He walked just seven batters and maintained a .245 batting average against, allowing just 37 hits and 15 runs.
Saydel won the conference outright with a 15-0 record, claiming the title by four and a half games. Greene County finished the conference slate with a 5-11 record. The Rams began the regular season losing 12 of their first 15 games but finished the year on an 8-4 run. They bowed out of postseason competition in a 15-0 four-inning loss to Boone July 15 in district play. The Rams finished the year at 11-17.
