The Greene County varsity girls basketball squad played host to South Hamilton Friday night and hit the road to Nevada on Tuesday night to compete in a pair of Heart of Iowa Conference games. The Rams picked up a 61-50 victory over the Hawks to earn their third win of the season, but fell to Nevada 65-7 to halt their short-lived success. The split puts Greene County at 3-9 against HOIC teams and 3-13 overall on the year.
In its game against South Hamilton, Greene County was led by sophomore Laurin Lyons, who had 27 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Sophomore Onica Delp followed with 10 points, six rebounds, a steal and two blocks, while Nicole Rohner scored seven points, Kenna Marquardt six points, Hannah Promes five points and Sunny Mobley four points. As a team, the Rams were 21 for 45 (46 percent) shooting from the field and 20 for 31 (64 percent) from the foul line.
“Our girls played by far their best game of the year tonight,” Greene County head coach Dean Lyons said. “We got into foul trouble early, but our bench players did a great job stepping up. Everyone played hard, our offense was clicking the whole night and it was a nice team win for us at this point of the season.”
Versus Nevada, Greene County was led by senior Cassidy Adamson, who scored four points and grabbed two rebounds. Junior Taylor Wessling followed by scoring three points, snagging three rebounds and stealing one ball. Lyons had four rebounds, Marquardt finished with three and Delp blocked one Nevada shot. As a team, the Rams shot 4 for 23 (17 percent) from the open floor and 0 for 6 (0 percent) from the free-throw line.
Greene County is scheduled to host Gilbert Friday night and will travel to North Polk Tuesday night.
