Jefferson swimmers place second in conference meet
Guthrie Center – The Jefferson swim team swam to a second place finish at the Iowa West Swim Conference meet Saturday, July 9 in Guthrie Center, behind the individual efforts of brothers, Nick and Gabe Schroeder and three relay titles. The Jefferson swimmers also took home10 second place honors and 10 third place finishes.
The Jefferson swimmers scored 227.5 total points, beating out Perry (213) and Guthrie Center (197) in a tight battle for the second spot. Carroll took home the team crown with a commanding 312 points. Denison (153), Sac City (121.5), Coon Rapids (120), Manning (54), Lake City (52) and Glidden (44) rounded out the top-10.
“Jefferson had many strong performances but couldn’t pull out the win against a very strong Carroll team,” head coach Jeff Schroeder said. “Jefferson took second place edging Perry, who finished a strong third.”
The 9-10 boys medley relay team of Cody Allen, Gavin Scheuermann, Nathan Ausberger and Jack Hansen took home the gold as did the the 13-14 girls medley relay and free relay teams of Ellie Madson, Sophie Havens, Megan Doran and Julia Saul.
“These relays finished the season undefeated and set many records along the way,” Schroeder said.
The Schroeder brothers were the lone Jefferson swimmers to capture individual glory on Saturday. Gabe was a force in the eight and under division, winning four gold medals in the freestyle, the backstroke, the breaststroke and the long-freestyle. Gabe’s time of 33.14 in the long long freestyle shattered the conference record, which was set at 34.68. It was the second consecutive year Gabe swept his individual events at the conference meet.
Older brother Nick continued his six-year long hot streak, capturing four golds in the high school division. He dominated the 50-yard freestyle, the individual medley, the 100-yard freestyle and the backstroke. The victories capped the soon-to-be Greene County senior’s sixth straight season without a loss - roughly 300 races over that span.
The swimmers dominated the pool all season long and finished the summer with just one blemish, a late June loss to eventual conference champion, Carroll.
