Greene County won the showdown of fourth ranked softball teams 10-7 in Jefferson on June 25. The Rams, who are ranked fourth in Class 3A were pitted against the Class 2A fourth ranked team, St. Edmond Gaels. Greene County broke out to a five run lead in the second inning when the visitors gave up a single to Tressa Rasmussen, walked Emma Saddoris, allowed Jenna Beyers to reach base on an error, gave up a two RBI triple to Carleigh Paup, and then watched as Emily Christensen cleared the bases with a 2-run home run. Bailey Godwin also drove in a run in that inning on a fielder’s choice. The fourth inning, the Gaels walked lead-off batter Godwin and gave up a single to Kayla Mobley before Christensen blasted a 3-run dinger. The home team added two more in the sixth when Mobley and Paup singled, and Marissa Promes and Christensen drove them in.
St. Edmond put up two in the third inning, when Jackie Stumpf hit a two run home run, but trailed 10-2 going into the final frame. The Gaels made the game exciting, scoring five times in the top of the seventh inning via a walk, two singles, two Ram errors, and a home run by Maggie Harvey. It seemed as if the Rams were never going to get the last out of the game, but finally the ninth batter of the inning hit a pop fly to Saddoris to end the Gael’s rally.
Pitcher Marissa Promes picked up her 18th pitching victory of the season, Emily Christensen had a career high six RBI, and Greene County extended their home win streak to 22 games. The squad will have a night off before playing in the South Hamilton Tournament on June 27.
