Rocket boys win 1, lose 2 in past week

Paton-Churdan’s varsity boys basketball squad dropped a 46-45 loss to Exira-EHK on Friday, defeated West Harrison 61-45 on Saturday and fell to Southeast Valley 67-51 on Tuesday. With the lone win and pair of losses, the Rockets fall to 9-4 on the year.

Against Exira-EHK, Noah Juergensen led the team with 23 points, 11 rebounds and a steal for a double-double, while teammate Jake Berns followed with 14 points, two rebounds and five steals. Joe Towers scored six points and Trevor Bundt added two points. As a team, Paton-Churdan shot 20 for 50 from the field and 5 for 10 from the free-throw line.

Against West Harrison, Juergensen led the Rockets with 17 points, 16 rebounds, three assists and a steal for a double-double, while Charlie Minnehan followed with 17 points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Berns poured in 14 points, Towers finished with 10 points and Bundt tallied three points. As a team, Paton-Churdan shot 26 for 59 from the floor and 15 for 30 from the foul line.

Against Southeast Valley, Juergensen once again led the team with 25 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal for an impressive seventh straight double-double, while Berns followed with 10 points, eight rebounds and a steal. Minnehan chipped in 10 points, Towers and Bundt had three points each and both Clayton Smith and Joe Thede grabbed a rebound. No team shooting stats were given for the contest.

“I’m very happy with our efforts tonight. We did some good things against a 2A team that has had a great season so far,” head coach Chris Stimson said after his team’s loss to Southeast Valley. “It makes a difference when we have four out of our five starters playing for 32 minutes and the other team has the flexibility to keep bringing guys in off the bench. We were pretty tired by the end of the game, but it was great to see them work hard the entire time.”

Girls pick up pair over recent opponents
The Rocket varsity girls team fell to Exira-EHK 65-53 on Friday, defeated West Harrison 77-41 on Saturday and toppled Southeast Valley 73-36 on Tuesday. Paton-Churdan is now 8-5 overall this season.

Against Exira-EHK, Carleigh Paup led the team with 25 points, four rebounds, two assists and seven steals, while teammate Sydney Koch followed with 11 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals. Grace Geisler and Jenna Beyers scored six points each and Kasey Lane finished with five points. As a team, Paton-Churdan shot 25 for 62 from the field and 8 for 12 from the free-throw line.

Against West Harrison, Paup led the Rockets with 36 points, a rebound, six assists and seven steals, while Koch followed with 18 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and 11 steals for a triple-double. Geisler scored nine points, Jenna Beyers tallied seven points, Lane chipped in four points and Reilly Niles finished with three points. As a team, Paton-Churdan shot 40 for 113 from the floor and 7 for 11 from the foul line.

Against Southeast Valley, Paup once again led the team with 32 points, four rebounds, seven assists and 13 steals for a double-double, while Lane followed with 12 points, 10 rebounds, an assist and a steal for a double-double. Geisler scored eight points, Niles and Megan Carey chipped in six points each, Koch had five points and Beyers finished with four points. No field goal stats were given, but Paton-Churdan did shoot 11 for 16 from the charity stripe.

“Our girls have continued to do what they’ve done since we got back from Christmas break and that’s playing great team basketball at a fast pace,” head coach Chris Petersen said following the Rocket’s win over Southeast Valley. “Tonight was another fantastic team effort, as we played great transition basketball and did a good job of controlling the inside on both sides of the ball. Overall this was a great team win.”
