Track and Field: Hoyle secures title at RVC meet

The Paton-Churdan co-ed track and field teams are peaking at the right time.

Rocket senior Danielle Hoyle anchored an impressive showing at the 2021 Rolling Valley Conference meet May 3 in Woodbine, tallying an individual title as well as a silver medal in the throwing events.
Hoyle snatched the championship trophy in the discus with a top throw of 118-05, besting second place Mallory Behnken of CAM by more than 10 feet (105-01.5) while Hoyle finished runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 37-10.5. CAM’s Molly Venteicher squeaked out the event title with a top throw of 39-02.

Carmyn Paup finished seventh in the long jump (13-05) while Ar-We-Va’s Kora Obrecht won the title with a top leap of 15-11.
Paup also finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (18.70), losing out to CAM’s Jackson Jade (16.85) and Glidden-Ralston’s Vanessa Kohler (17.13). P-C’s Karissa Stephenson was eighth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 6:58.21 while teammate Autumn Consier finished ninth (7:09.29). Glidden-Ralston’s Alexia Nelson won the race with a time of 5:40.43.

The Rockets secured seventh place in the sprint medley, as the quartet of Paup, Bri Cullum, Emma Stream and Chloe Berns finished with a time of 2:14.45 while Ar-We-Va captured the event crown, cruising to a time of 2:01.65.

P-C’s distance medley relay of Stream, Cullum, Berns and Stephenson finished sixth with a time of 5:28.78.
Paton-Churdan finished eighth as a team in the girls standings, securing 20 total points.

Host Woodbine captured the team conference championship with 143 points, edging out runner-up CAM (125). Ar-We-Va (79), Glidden-Ralston (72) and Boyer Valley (55) rounded out the top five while West Harrison finished sixth (41) and Exira-EHK eighth (37).

Thompson anchors boys in Woodbine

Paton-Churdan’s Forest Thompson was a beacon of hope at the Rolling Valley Conference meet May 3 in Woodbine.

The senior snatched a bronze medal in the 1,600-meter run, cruising to a time of 5:28.8 while Boyer Valley’s Patrick Heffernan secured the gold with a time of 5:01.05. Woodbine’s Landon Bendgen wasn’t far behind, claiming silver with a time of 5:03.44.
Rocket sprinter James Currier finished top 10 in both sprint events, securing an eighth place finish in the 100-meter dash (12.97) and ninth in the 200-meter dash (26.89). Glidden-Ralston’s Brigham Daniel swept both titles, running an 11.22 in the 100-meter and cruising to a time of 23.02 in the 200-meter dash. Daniel also won the 400-meter conference title, securing a time of 51.99.  

Paton-Churdan finished eighth in the sprint medley relay, as the quartet of Logan Butler, Forest Thompson, Brenden Taylor and Connor Brus ran a time of 2:04.37. Glidden-Ralston won the relay title with an impressive time of 1:41.38, nearly two seconds quicker than West Harrison (1:43.36).

The Rockets also finished eighth in the distance medley, with a quartet of Bradyn Smith, Butler, Taylor and Brus running to a time of 4:36.83.
Smith snagged top tier placement in both the shot put and the discus, finishing sixth in the shot with a top throw of 35-10 while he placed fifth in the discus (120-09).

Woodbine’s Layne Pryor swept the throwing events, securing a title in the shot put (53-03.5) and the discus (172-10.5). Pryor is the state’s leader, regardless of class in the discus, having tossed a season-best 185 feet a few weeks beforehand.
Pryor’s dominant performance helped spark Woodbine to the team RVC title with 148 points, squeaking past second-place CAM (124). Glidden-Ralston (74), West Harrison (68) and Coon Rapids-Bayard rounded out the top five.

Paton-Churdan finished alone in ninth with 11 points.
